Crockpot Applesauce or Apple Butter

Posted on by Jen F

Applesauce and Apple Butter are extremely easy to make at home.  I like to keep it around during baking season around the holidays because I will often substitute it for butter in a few recipes.  Making this substitution is one of my tricks for super moist and tasty goodies!  Making extra apples into a sauce is also an excellent way to preserve the abundance of locally harvested apples that you can enjoy throughout the long winter months.

Plain Applesauce

5- 6  large apples, cored and cubed (skins can stay on)

juice of one lemon

1/4 cup sugar/maple syrup/honey (optional depending on tartness of apple you are using)

In a crockpot, add your cubed apples, lemon juice, and sweetener (if you desire).  Set the crockpot to low and cook for about 3-4 hours.  Check occasionally and stir with a wooden spoon.  Once finished cooking, take a stick blender and blend the applesauce to your desired consistency.  You can also use a stand blender.  Store in the refrigerator in a mason jar or you can, can the applesauce to seal it so you can keep it stored in the pantry.

Spiced Applesauce and Apple Butter Option

6 large apples

juice of one lemon

1 Tablespoon cinnamon

1/2 Tablespoon nutmeg

1/4 cup sugar/maple syrup/honey (optional depending on tartness of apple you are using)

In a crockpot, add your cubed apples, lemon juice, and sweetener (if you desire).  Set the crockpot to low and cook for about 3-4 hours.  Check occasionally and stir with a wooden spoon.  Blend the applesauce with a hand blender until the desired consistency.  And follow the storage instructions from the above instructions.

To make Apple Butter: Once the applesauce is blended, keep the heat on low for the applesauce, but leave the lid half off the crockpot.  This will allow the steam and water to evaporate giving you a thicker product.  Store as mentioned above.
